When the weather outside is frightful this winter, don’t get bundled up in blankets and hide out in front of the fire, put on a good coat, hat, and gloves, wrap that scarf around your head
, and head out to the mountains or a nice, frozen pond to enjoy some of the best sports of winter.
Snowboarding
Two feet, one waxed board, and a slope. Strap in and enjoy the adrenaline rush that comes from a quick trip down the mountain. There is no need to control two skis, so if you find your legs going in opposite directions on two boards, you may have a better time with one.
It is the best because: You can fly down the mountain as quickly or slowly as you feel comfortable. Take a lesson to get started, and enjoy! Snowboarding is hip, and if you hang around the right crowd, you may find yourself doing skateboard-like tricks on the half pipe at the mountain.
Skiing
Downhill skiing offers the fun of a race down the mountain and the excitement of mastering the boards beneath you.
It is the best because: Some people find that skiing is more natural than snowboarding because you have more freedom to move your legs independently. It is more traditional, loads of fun, and you can still enjoy jumps if you want to try them.
Ice Skating
There are rinks where you can ice skate year round, but there is something special about being able to skate in the great outdoors, whether at a seasonal rink or on a (very) frozen pond. Make sure there is no thin ice, and enjoy!
It is the best because: Ice skating is relatively easy to master, and is similar to inline skating. You can start slow with tricks like skating backward and work up to jumping or doing other fun stunts. Plus, skating in a light snowfall is pure magic!
Sledding
Grab a sled or a snow disk and find yourself a nice, tree free slope that ends in a protected area of some kind (never sled into a street.) It is fun and exciting for people of any age, and is a great way to spend time together as a family, even with very young kids.
It is the best because: You don’t need a mountain, you don’t need fancy equipment, and you don’t need to pay admission. Perfect!
Snowball Fights
Really, could there be anything more fun than throwing balls of snow at your loved ones? Build snowmen sentries and snow forts and stock up on your ammunition. Snowball fights are terrific fun for people of all ages, and although they may not technically be a sport, they are physically active games and will get your heart pumping for sure!
It is the best because: You get to throw things at your friends and family and not get in trouble. This is especially good for siblings, but snowball fights can be fun for any group of people. Try it with a group of other adults, and watch the inner child emerge.
