Your wedding day is a memorable day, a day in which you want everything to be perfect from the attire, location and food to the photos, entertainment and music.

wedding songsLike most couples you probably want your wedding be different, to be traditional but have some twists and be distinctive. Your wedding should be a statement about who you are as person and as a couple. The music played throughout the day should reflect this as well. Just because it’s your wedding day and you’re trying to stick to some traditions doesn’t mean you have to do everything by the book. Here are some great ideas for song selections on your big day.

The walk down the aisle
You don’t have to walk down the aisle to the traditional wedding march music. Make a different selection if you want. Choose something beautiful and classy, use a song with lyrics that are loving and personal. Make it special to you. Some great suggestions: Norah Jones “Love Me Tender,” Enya “Only Time” and Kelly Clarkson “A Moment Like This.”

Your first dance
This is your moment to shine. It should be a song you both love or perhaps even the first song you remember when you were together or the first song the two of you danced to. It doesn’t have to be slow even though most first dances traditionally are. If you want to break out in a tango, disco or hip hop dance go for it! This is all about you two as a couple so make it that. Make it personal. Here are some more traditional slow songs but different than what is usually selected. Allison Krauss “When You Say Nothing At All,” Rascal Flatts “Bless the Broken Road” and Adam Sandler “I’ll Grow Old With You.”

Father/daughter and mother/son dances
Ah, the moment the parents look forward to all night, the dance with their children. It’s a bittersweet moment that you get to share with a loved one. This should be a song that means something to you. But avoid the overused songs like Butterfly Kisses, In My Father’s Arm and Endless Love. Try Louis Armstrong “What A Wonderful World,” or Josh Groban “You Raise Me Up.”

General dance music
It is best to mix themes, genres and styles of music to accommodate all your guests. If you plan on having lots of older folks don’t only play hip hop and rap, through in some oldies and disco tunes that they can sway to as well. The best thing to do is just make sure you have a little bit of everything to make all of your guests happy and encourage them to get up on the dance floor.

Grand entrance song
Have fun! The ceremony is over and now it’s time to celebrate as a happily married couple! Pick something upbeat and let the party begin!
