Weddings are wonderful events that are filled with friends and family celebrating the uniting of two people as a couple and starting one life together. It’s a beautiful thing. The first thing that sets the tone of the entire wedding is the invitation.
An invitation is more than a piece of paper asking you to attend a blessed event, it’s a statement. It can inform a guest of what attire is appropriate, the theme and even how much you really care about your guests in general.
Thus taking the time to really think your choices through is of the utmost importance.
Figure out the tone and/or theme
What is the tone of your wedding? Is it a casual afternoon party or a nighttime black tie affair? Does your wedding have an actual theme such as the beach, autumn leaves, Star Wars or other ideas?
If your wedding has a distinct theme your invitations should have elements of the theme intertwined. Perhaps the invitations are shaped accordingly, have photos of the theme’s elements or printed characters that correspond with the theme. If your wedding is a very formal wedding you want your invitations to express this as well. A homemade scrapbook invitation would be perfect for a backyard wedding but not a black tie affair. Also, think about your wedding colors and try to use them on the invitation and envelope.
Travel, accommodations and directions
Show your guests you’re thinking about them by making it as easy as possible for them to attend your wedding. Provide a map and directions from a few different places. Also have a sheet with all the nearest accommodations for guests to spend the night. List a couple different hotels with different price ranges so that everyone’s tastes and means are accounted for. If some guests will be traveling a great distance list some local attractions and points of interest they might enjoy during their trip.
RSVP options
In this modern age there is more than one way to communicate. There are phones, email and of course, regular mail. Why not make it possible for guests to reach you in more than one way? It means everyone is happy. Give them the option to call in or email their RSVP as well as the traditional mailed RSVP card. This way everyone gets to use their favorite form of communication and you’ll have a better chance of getting more RSVPs back by the listed reply date.
Registries
Include information about your registries so that your guests won’t be left guessing or having to ask around about where you’re registered. Most stores provide small business size cards to announce you’re registered at their store. Simply slip these little cards in the invitation with the rest of the items.
Additional notes
If you have anything special you would like to mention to your guest simply have a small note on the bottom of the main invitation sheet. This applies to notes of “adults only please” or “black and white attire is preferred” and other requests. Keep it diplomatic so you don’t offend anyone but still get your point across.
