The Wii is perhaps more popular than the DS Lite, iPod, Furbies and Tickle Me Elmo were when they were first introduced. Everybody wants one and there doesn’t seem to be enough to go around.
This creates a dynamic called supply and demand. In this case the demand is higher than the supply.
What happens then is consumers will visit online auction sites looking for a bargain on a Wii console. Most of the time they will pay more through an auction site than if it was new on the store shelf. The problem can be waiting, which is why many consumers will pay the extra to get the Wii sooner rather than later.
When the DS Lite was first introduced my son told me he wanted one. I looked at all the normal retailers for one, but they were always sold out and many had waiting lists. I looked online and a used one was selling for more than new. These sellers were getting the prices they wanted because of the unit’s popularity.

If you are patient you can get on a list to receive a Wii at your favorite gaming retailer. It could take a few weeks in some cases, but you will pay no more than retail and the resident gaming expert can help you determine exactly what you will need in the system you buy including accessories and games. You should be able to leave the store with everything you need to play.
Don’t Wanna Wait
You may find online retailers or auction sites may have what you are looking for. Check descriptions to make sure you are getting what you need. It is possible to buy a unit and find out after the fact that there was no promise for controllers or even any games. What you end up with is a unit that can play games you don’t have, may not be able to get and might not be able to control.
Extend Trust Cautiously
Most online merchants want to have the opportunity to impress you and earn your business honestly. There are, however, some business owners who are simply after a quick buck. These individuals may show up on eBay or Craig’s List or they may have their own website. If you decide to make the purchase of a Wii console from a company you’ve never heard of before you need to keep track of what was promised, when you should expect delivery and even go so far as to ask for a phone number or other reasonable means of personal contact in case you have questions. It may seem like a lot to ask, but remember you are the one paying for the product. They need to deliver exactly what they promised.
Extreme Measures
Whether it’s a personal purchase of something intended as a gift for someone else the purchase of a Wii will most often be received enthusiastically. That excitement can be minimized when you don’t have everything you need to play. It can result in lots of extra expense in purchasing controllers and games you thought were included.
