In the slumping economic times that we face today, less people are traveling on vacation—much less driving anywhere—mostly due to the astronomical prices of fuel. The primary factor taken into consideration for most people who are traveling is the over-emphasis on their budget; how much will this trip cost, can they afford it, and is the trip really worth taking?

hotel discountsAsk anybody and they will tell you that aside from airfare, the most costly aspect of any vacation is the lodging. Perhaps this is why so many people avidly shop around for the best deals on hotel discounts, so they can shorten the laundry list of costs associated with their trip. And certainly—for those of us trying to find better hotel discounts—having more tips on getting cheaper hotel room rates is helpful to this cause.

Compare Online Prices
Your first step is to compare online prices. There are so many deals to be had on the internet when looking for hotel discounts that the prospects are seemingly never-ending. Before you call any hotel, anywhere, look online. You can even use a hotel shopping price comparison search engine that will actually sift through all of the clutter that you might find on the larger discount hotel room website, and bring back only the least expensive results from each site.

Call the Hotel Directly
After you have researched different prices online, call the hotels of choice. Tell the customer reservations representative that you want to book a reservation but you are wondering if they can beat the rate that you were quoted online. Not all hotels will be able to do this, but many will even strive to beat the quoted rate on the discount hotels websites so they can avoid paying those sites a booking commission.

Use your Triple-A card (if you have one)
Lots of people forget that many hotels will actually offer them a rate called the Triple-A rate—this rate is applied if you are able to present your Triple-A membership card at the time of check-in. Typically hotels offer a ten percent discount to all Triple-A members.

Use a Senior Citizen Discount (Seniors Only)
For all of you young-at-heart senior citizens who are traveling and trying to find cheap hotel rooms, simply call the hotel and let them know that you are a senior. Like the above Triple-A discount, most hotels offer a senior discount of 10%, and some will even let you combine both discounts, for seniors who have a Triple-A membership.
