For Spring 2009, shoes turn wild and whimsical! The best designers, such as Manolo Blahnik, continue to push shoe designs to the edge, taking us along for the ride.
This Spring, skyscraper heels, metallics, patchwork, and gladiator details make buying shoes a pleasure. If you need something more practical, with less embellishment, you can also find flat or low-heeled sandals that are wearable, but still fun.
Everyone notices shoes, and they can really amp of the impact of even the simplest wardrobe basics. If you take the time to find out which Spring trends work for you, you can add a touch of modern style to everything you put on! Some high-fashion shoes go for over $1100 dollars a pair, but trends soon trickle down to a more affordable price point. Take a look at the most sophisticated, high-fashion trends for footwear this season, and you’ll know what to look for, whatever your budget.
Here are the top five trends in women’s shoe design for Spring:
Patchwork

Manolo Blahnik has designed an unforgettable stiletto heel that features delicate patchwork - a mixture of leathers in complementary colors. His version uses red, yellow, green, and orange to inject a bold shot of color. Blahnik is a master because he is daring, and willing to take risks. He is also a superb craftsman. Sex and The City’s Carrie Bradshaw collected his shoes, and so do many women. If you can’t afford authentic Blahniks, look for patchwork designs with slim, delicate heels, to get the same effect for Spring 09.
Gladiator

Gladiator sandals were also hot last Spring and Summer, with celebrities like Gwenyth Paltrow choosing high-heeled versions to wear with short dresses. This year, Roman or Gladiator sandals are all over runways, most with three inch heels. There are also a host of flat Roman sandals, that are far more comfortable and practical. The Gladiator sandal requires confidence – it is the sort of shoe that everyone will notice! Make sure you feel comfortable in this type of footwear before spending your money.
Woven Sandals

These sandals were popular during the mid to late eighties, and now they are back! These sandals feature thin strips of leather, usually in natural tan, woven together in a complex series of patterns. Woven sandals can be flat or high-heeled, and they have a handmade, earthy feel.
Metallic Shoes

Metallics have been hot for seasons now, and women still enjoy the hint of glitz that metallic sandals bring to an outfit. Wearing a metallic shoe, whether it is subtle or bold, is fun for most women. This trend keeps returning, and this Spring, hot designers like Tory Burch and Nanette Lepore showed sandals and ballet flats in gold.
Wedge Shoes

Affordable wedge sandals, such as those found in the Gap’s Spring Line, can give women a taller, more willowy silhouette. Women enjoy the comfort of wedge designs, even though they can be a little unstable at times. Wedges support the foot better than stilettos, but they still add height and sexiness. The Gap is featuring bold wedge sandals with white platform soles, and thick straps, to go with their short spring dresses, and wide-leg pants.
