Epson Stylus C88+

This printer is black and silver, and its dimensions are 18” w, 15 1/2” d (with paper output tray fully extended,) and 13 1/2” h (with paper-feed backing attached.) It comes with one cartridge each of black, cyan, magenta, and yellow ink; printer documentation; and a CD-ROM containing printer software for Windows® and Macintosh® operating systems.

Price
The price of the product was $79.99 + tax.

The Good
I have found this to be a sturdy, reliable printer for a home office.  It is relatively quiet.   Black and color ink cartridges sold individually make it easy to replace only the cartridge(s) low on ink.  They are also sold packaged together, and are typically less expensive when purchased that way.

This printer uses Epson DURABrite® ink, which the product literature says is fast drying, and is smudge, fade, and water resistant.  I have found this to be true.  Also, when printing a color image or black text, even on the best color setting, I have found the ink does not bleed through good quality ink jet paper.

Three buttons are at the top of the printer.  The right button’s green light indicates the printer is on, the center button’s red light flashes red when there is a paper jam, and the left button’s red light flashes when a cartridge is getting low on ink.  At this point, the cartridge may be replaced. When the red light becomes solid, the cartridge is out of ink and must be replaced.

Paper jams are usually easy to clear by gently pulling the stuck paper out, or lifting the printer’s lid and removing it that way.
Before printing, a screen appears if the ink is low.

Options are given to buy a cartridge through Epson, at a local dealer located by zip code, or continuing to print providing there is ink left in the cartridge.

When you choose to print, a screen appears and allows for easily changing the paper type; changing page orientation; choosing draft, text, text and image, photo, and best photo options for print quality; performing maintenance; and other options.

The maintenance tab can be selected if text or images are missing certain colors or are unexpectedly light or faint.  A nozzle check pattern can then be printed to identify if the print head needs to be cleaned.  If indicated, this can be done with a click of the mouse.  The printer performs a nozzle cleaning so that the ink is delivered to the page properly. These functions can also be accessed by clicking the printer icon on the monitor screen.

This product prints borderless pictures with excellent color quality on matte or glossy photo paper.

The Bad
The nozzle cleaning feature uses up ink, especially on the infrequent occasions I’ve had to repeat the process several times.
Additional Information

The printer comes with a one-year limited warranty.
