Deciding how to do your makeup on prom night can be tricky – it’s easy to go overboard and load on the glitter and gloss because you want to feel glamorous. Remember, you are already young and beautiful, so less is more! Flatter your features by choosing one part of your face, such as your eyes, cheeks, or lips, and keep the rest neutral. This technique is used by all the best makeup artists, to ensure that makeup looks fresh, modern, and high style for special occasions. Avoid a drastic change to your makeup look on prom night – your date is going to want to see you at your best, not covered in a lot of unusual cosmetics.

Take your cue from nature, and play up what you already have! If you’ve been complimented on your eyes, lips, or smooth complexion, then choose your best attribute and highlight it with makeup that adds a touch of color and glamour, but doesn’t overpower you. Here are ways to flatter your best features, and your prom dress, on your big night.

Eyes

It’s easy to make eyes stand out, and you can have fun here. Consider going to the mall or the MAC store and asking for tips about what colors of makeup with flatter your eyes. If you have dark eyes, a smoky makeup look in pinks and plums will look sultry without being too dark. If your eyes are green, a little plum liner or shadow will make them pop, intensifying their rare color. Blue eyes look best with bronzy shadows that make their light shade seem deeper and brighter.

You can use a little sparkle here, there are great eyeliners that actually have sparkle and glitter built in, and they are subtle enough that you will feel comfortable wearing them. Celebrities often opt for false lashes for big events, but a couple of coats of mascara should be enough. Remember, false eyelashes can be hard to apply – you don’t want them coming off during your prom! Keep it simple with black mascara, shadows that flatter your eyes color, and be sure to groom your brows as well. Add a little brow pencil to define, only if it’s needed, and don’t go overboard.

Cheeks/Complexion

If you get complements on your fresh complexion and glowing cheeks, play them up on prom night. Add a little creamy blush, peachy pink for warm skin tones, or rosy pink for cool skin tones, and layer on a little bronzer or sheer blush, for the Hollywood look. Stars like Reese Witherspoon often layer cream and powder blushers to get a radiant look that lasts for hours. For your skin, consider moisturizing well a couple of hours before the event, letting it sink in so your makeup goes on more smoothly. Blot your face with a tissue before you apply your makeup, so you aren’t too shiny, and apply foundation only where you need it. Foundation makes women look older, and you don’t need much at your age! Keep it simple, dotting a tiny dab of concealer on any blemishes, and then adding a dusting of translucent powder to keep it in place.

Remember, glowing cheeks and radiant, healthy skin will minimize the impact of any blemishes you have – and so will smiling. Loading on the concealer may actually make your little spots more prominent. Concentrate on creating a healthy flush, and you’ll look wonderful on prom night.

Lips

If you have pretty, full lips that people notice, play them up by experimenting with lipstick and gloss on prom night. Don’t choose red lipstick if you never wear it normally – it can be glamorous, but also harsh and aging in certain light. Instead, take you cue from the natural color of your lips, and from your skin tone. Olive skins do better in warn tones like brick (subtle orange-red, not too bright) or peachy tones. Cool skin tones are flattered by deep rose, mauve, and even grape. Look at celebs and see what they choose to wear with their gowns. You’ll find darker skin looks great with lighter lips, like J.Lo’s baby pink, for example, and pale skin is more flattered by a shot of bright colour, like Reese Witherspoon’s fuchsia.

Always add a shot of shine with a shimmering gloss that enhances the illusion of fullness. Take along a fun, flavored gloss that smells great, and smile!

Keeping in Mind

On prom night, remember that you are young and beautiful. Have fun with makeup, but don’t cake it on! You don’t need it, and you’ll look better if you apply it sparingly, concentrating on one feature that you are proud of.
