Prom. Just the mention of the word and there are visions of a wonderful rite of passage. Daddy’s little girl and Mommy’s little man are somehow neither when they put on the dress or tuxedo. Something fundamental changes and it is a natural part of growing up.
Something New
For some girls there will be custom fit prom dresses in their future. These young ladies will arrive in a dress especially crafted and/or fitted for the special event. There are numerous online locations where styles and accessories can be explored.
Something Used
There will also be some who find a used prom dress that can fill the bill. This is a cost effective way to manage the expenses of prom. The dress may come from an older sibling or cousin. It could also come from a thrift store – even your own mother.
If you think this is a horrible way to acquire a dress for prom consider what most young ladies will do with their prom dress when the dance is over. It may go in a closet for a while, but at some point this beautiful and expensive dress will be sent to a second hand shop (unless you’re the star of 27 Dresses). It may surprise you to know that young ladies on a budget will see this as a brilliant way to get a prom dress. It is also likely they will turn around and sell or give the dress back to the second hand store when they are finished with it.
Something Recycled
Let’s forget professional designers for a moment. Like the ‘Something Used’ section of this article the recycled crowd will envision something entirely new from an existing prom dress. They might alter it and provide new accents and even new fabric enhancements. Others might radically remake the dress into something that may be more punk oriented or even a simple knee-length or slightly shorter dress.
Making the Dress Your Own
The prom dress is not simply something you toss on that is some disembodied ornament. It needs to become a part of you. Some will view a brand new form fitting dress as the best means to achieve that. However, it is equally true that the personality of the one wearing the dress can shine through in all circumstances.
In the story of Cinderella do you believe the prince was fixated on who made the young lady’s dress (remember it was an aging fairy godmother) or did he more likely pay attention to the face, hands, hair and words that came from the one wearing – a dress? When he went to find the princess later was he looking for a dress or the girl who wore it once?
Not Ashamed
There doesn’t need to be any shame in finding a way to save money on a prom dress. Remember this is likely something you will only wear one time. There may actually be some adventure in recasting an existing dress into something that is uniquely you. If you aren’t especially skilled at a prom dress makeover you might have a mom, grandma or friend who can help create a one of a kind dress for a one of a kind event.
And if you really want to take a look at the dress later make sure you get lots of photos.
