keeping fit for the holidaysThe holidays are a wonderful time of joy and family traditions but they can do a number on your waistline. You may find that your pocketbook is thin and your stomach is thick, most likely not the situation you’re going for. But with so many parties and festivities filled with delicious sweet treats and fattening meals, how can you avoid putting on a few extra pounds during the holidays?

It all comes down to strategic planning and altering a few habits so you can still enjoy the holiday season but be happy with your waistline at the end of it. Here are some tips to help you fight the bulge while still having your cake too.

ham sandwich Eat before you go to a party
Have a small meal before you go to a party. Make sure it is something healthy but substantial. A salad won’t likely hold you back from snacking your heart out but a hearty sandwich or big bowl of soup will fill your belly and help you resist the chip and dip platters and brownies galore. When you get to the party try to only eat the healthy snacks like carrots and shrimp. It may be difficult to pass up all those fried foods and butter covered dishes but just think about how hard you’ll have to work to get the weight off and you might just think twice.

chewing gum diet Chew gum
To stop yourself from eating too much one good strategy is to chew gum. Your mouth will be satisfied and busy which will stop you from picking up just anything and sticking it in your mouth. You can do this right when you get to a party to avoid munching on the appetizers or do it after your meal so you won’t continue to eat after you’ve already had your full meal.

Exercise each morning
Since the holiday season is busy with running around and endless festivities you’ll likely will have trouble maintaining a consistent workout schedule if it’s in the evenings or at night. Instead get up a little early each day and fit your workout into your morning routine. This way you’re sure to get some exercise plus it’s a great way to wake up and actually feel better overall, especially after a long night of partying.

Watch your drinking habits
Most of us forget how many calories are in our precious liquid refreshments. A beer or soda can have more than one hundred calories each and even that hard alcohol isn’t safe. Most mixers like soda and juice are filled with tons of hidden calories which trouble you later when you step on the scale. One of the worst holiday offenders? Egg nog. Avoid it if possible.
