Dress to look youngerOn a mission to shave 10 years off your overall appearance? You’re not alone—plenty of women are in the same boat. The good news is, you don’t need to spend your life savings on surgery to reverse the aging process; you just need to be armed with knowledge: a few tricks to help you look younger and feel great.

Looking and feeling younger will come with living healthier (staying hydrated, eating well, being active) as well as taking good care of your hair and skin (which includes using makeup to your advantage), but you can also dress to look 10 years younger. That’s right - what you wear can reveal your true age, help you look younger, or even, unfortunately, pile on the years. Here are some tricks to help you hold on to the semblance of youth through clothing:

Enlist some help
Find a trusted girlfriend or your daughter or niece - or anyone you know well with good fashion sense - to help you make your wardrobe changes. You will need honesty, encouragement, and motivation.

Throw out the bad
You wouldn’t be here in the first place if you didn’t have garbage hanging in your closet. Get rid of everything that’s old, worn, outdated and old-fashioned, and ill-fitting.

Choose classic pieces
Pick out some quality, well-made, classic pieces that won’t go out of style and that you can wear for years. Chic black boots, a tailored trenchcoat, a pair of neutral trousers, a pair of dark-wash, wide-leg jeans, a classic, rich-colored cardigan, a basic white blouse, and a neutral pant suit are some great starter pieces. Don’t forget accessories!

10 years younger Follow trends
At the same time, it helps to follow trends! You don’t want to be stuck in a time warp with your clothes; regularly update your wardrobe with a few new items you can mix with your classic pieces. Try to pay attention to trends verses fads, and always be age-appropriate. One trick you can use: follow respected celebrities in your age bracket.

Quality, not quantity
It’s all about the quality of what you buy, not how much, that matters. Five pairs of dated, ill-fitting jeans may cost as much as one great pair of high-quality, designer jeans, but the latter will actually fit you, flatter you, and last you a long time, while the former will make you look like a cheap, frumpy old lady.

Dress for your shape
Dressing correctly for your shape (whether you’re bottom-heavy, top-heavy, rounded, etc.) can take years off your appearance. Far too many women have simply “given up” on their bodies once they hit a certain age, and they way they dress shows it, adding unnecessary years - and pounds. Simply by choosing clothes that flatter your shape, that fit, and that help create balance and proportion, you can strip away the years.

Don’t aim too young
Unfortunately, on their quest for a more youthful look, some women try to look too young, which only emphasizes how old they really are. A 40-something trying to look 25 or a 30-something trying to look like a teenager are way too obvious and they will only look older than they really are! Choose age-appropriate styles, cuts, shapes, and pieces that lend an air of quality and sophistication.
