halloween costumes for kids and adultsHalloween is right around the corner, and it’s time to start thinking about costumes! Whether you’ll be dressing up your kids to go trick-or-treating, dressing up with your kids to go trick-or-treating together, handing out candy, or heading off to a fabulous Halloween costume party, you’ll need some ideas for great Halloween costumes.

Unfortunately, a lot of the costumes you’ll find in a store cost a pretty penny and, what’s even worse, you don’t quite seem to get what you pay for! However, there is hope for you if you don’t want to dish out $50 at “Halloween Costumes ‘R’ Us.” This year, instead of wasting your money on store-bought Halloween costumes, try putting them together yourself instead. You don’t have to be an artist, a fashion designer, or even a whiz on the sewing machine—you just need a little creativity and a little time.

Clown
Get colorful and get crazy! Go through the house and pick out brightly colored, mismatched, and oversized clothes. If you have a colorful wig, use it; if not, buy a wig at a dollar store or make your own construction-paper hat and decorate it with random household objects. Use makeup (particularly different lipstick shades) for the face.

Ghost
A classic and oh-so-simple-to-make Halloween costume. Simply get an old white sheet (either on hand in your home or dirt cheap from a secondhand store) and cut out holes.

Witch
Dress in all black, make a black cape (using a black sheet, old black fabric, etc.) and black construction-paper cone hat, get creative with makeup and/or face paint, and you’re good to go.

Angel
An old white sheet will work great for this, too. For that special angelic look, try spraying on clear spray paint and lightly dusting the sheet with glitter before it dries. Use some old Christmas tinsel (gold or silver) to adorn the edges of the sheet and for a halo. Tin foil-covered clothes hangers can make wings.

Princess
Use a fancy party dress you already own, borrow a dress, buy a used one at a secondhand store, or take one of mom’s old slips and hem it to fit the princess-to-be. If your little girl already has dress-up clothes and accessories (and most do!), use those instead of buying a specific princess Halloween costume. Make a wand with a stick and tin foil-covered cardboard star. Dress-up jewelry, Mom’s jewelry, makeup, and glitter are the finishing touches.

Hobo
The hobo can simply wear old, worn, ripped, and/or stained clothes (gardening, paint, or work clothes are great!), smudged makeup to look dirty, mismatched, well-worn shoes, and a ratty old hat.

Old Man/Old Lady
Dress in age-appropriate clothing (like suits); add a hat, a cane, some reading glasses, and makeup for wrinkles.

Big Baby
An easy-peasy costume for anyone of any age. Overtop a tight T-shirt and pants, wear a homemade cloth diaper with pins. Add a bonnet, carry a bottle or pacifier around, and use a lot of pink blush on the cheeks.

There are many other simple costumes you can throw together yourself without having to waste your time and money with store-bought costumes. Other ideas include ballerina, pirate, nerd, rockstar, animals, scarecrow, hippie, superhero, etc.…Simply use items you have on hand at home and get creative!
