It’s easy to get into a rut with fashion, and find yourself staring into your closet in exasperation. The common complaint, “I have nothing to wear” may come to mind as you ponder the state of your current wardrobe.
If you are interested in upgrading your wardrobe to better reflect your personal style, and your personal growth, we can help! There are some excellent ways to sort and make decisions about what is needed: you can put them to good use as you go through your current wardrobe and pinpoint the most effective items to buy in order to present a more polished, fashionable image to the world at large. Here are some easy tips on upgrading your wardrobe:
The Three-Pile System
This system will allow you to really take stock of what you love about your clothes and accessories. Simply make three piles or use three large bins to sort everything you own. If you love it, put it in the Keep Box.
If you know it is dated, or you haven’t worn it in six months, consider placing it in the Donate Box. If you are on the fence about certain items that might need repair or alterations, but are still wearable, place them in the Maybe Box, and be sure to have the clothes fixed if you decide to keep them.
Once you’ve gotten rid of the Donate Box, by phoning a worthwhile charity (they often pick things up for you), you will have a more realistic sense of what you need.
The Seven Piece Essential Wardrobe
If you are a woman who works in a corporate environment, you will need seven easy pieces you can mix or match so that mornings are easier and less plagued with concerns about what to wear.
1 and 2. Business Suit: Jacket and Pants
If you invest in a really good, dark business suit, consisting of a jacket and pants, in navy or black, you cannot go wrong. This should be the building block of your seven-piece wardrobe, so buy the best quality you can possibly afford here.
Consider upscale consignment stores if you are on a budget: often, they sell clothes that still have tags on them, from very respected designers. Look for names like Calvin Klein, Anne Klein, Anne Taylor, or Liz Claiborne if you want a professional look that will work in almost any office setting.
3. Skirt
Once you have your two-piece pantsuit, you will need to buy a skirt that complements the jacket, perhaps in a different shade: this will be your third piece. A pencil skirt to the knee that skims the body without being tight is your best bet here, perhaps in charcoal, which looks great with navy and black: this modern palette is also timeless, and will never go out of style.
4. Blouse
For your fourth piece, consider a blouse in charmeuse silk or jersey, or any rich fabric. Choose a blouse in a softer tone that complements your coloring. Some good choices are ivory or yellow for women with warm complexions. Pure white or pale blue will work well if you are rosy and cool.
5. Cardigan
The fifth piece you should look for is a cardigan or belted sweater you can wear with both the skirt and pants. You can opt for a bolder color here, such as cobalt or red, just be sure it is a color you love to wear.
6. Wrap Dress
For your sixth piece, consider a wrap dress such as those designed by Diane Von Furstenburg: the cut is universally flattering, and it can double as a dinner dress with some bolder jewelry and higher heels. For the seventh piece, consider a trench coat in a neutral color to top it all off. I can guarantee, if you purchase these seven polished pieces, and combine them with what you already own, you will look fabulous every day.
