Find the right jeans for you, no matter your shape Are you hiding your “less-than-perfect” body in a sad pair of baggy, frumpy, ill-fitting jeans?

The key to looking good in your jeans is not losing 10 or 20 pounds or going from a size 14 to a size 4—it’s finding that perfect pair of jeans to suit your body shape right now, whether you’re tall, short, round, curvy, or thin.

Most women who are committing fashion crimes with their choice in jeans are doing so for three reasons: lack of time, lack of money, and lack of the “perfect body.”

You need to overcome these jean-shopping barriers. First, if you don’t have the time, make time. Don’t try to fit in shopping among a myriad of other errands while you’ve got kids in two. Give yourself an entire afternoon or evening to devote to snagging that perfect pair.

Second, if you don’t want to spend $500 on designer jeans, that’s fine, but realize that it will cost you more than $20 for that perfect pair. Save up some money for your shopping trip and stop wasting it on $10 jeans that don’t fit or look good.

Third, stop obsessing about your body’s “flaws”. No one has the “perfect” body and everybody can find a great pair of jeans if they put in a little effort.

Now it’s time to go shopping!

You can follow these steps to help ensure your jean-shopping experience is a little less frustrating and a little more fulfilling.

Pick a handful of stores you’ll want to browse through and plan to visit all of them. Not all jean stores are created equally and each will offer a unique assortment of sizes, styles, brands, and prices.

Commit to trying on as many jeans as it takes until you come away with that just-right-for-you pair. Trying on one, two, or even 10 pairs of jeans will simply not do. Choose a variety of washes and styles, even if you think they might not flatter you. You never know until you try it on!

Set a flexible budget and try to stick with it so you’re not spending more than you can realistically afford. However, keep in mind that high-quality jeans will cost more than most department store brands—but the price is worth it if you can snag that perfect pair.

Learn your body type. Are you tall? Short? Heavy on top? Heavy on bottom? Curvy? Thin? Look at proportions and your overall shape.

Choose a pair of jeans that flatters your body type and shape. Here is a quick guide to help you:

Tall. Choose jeans with a longer inseam. You can also take out the hem of too-short jeans.

Petite.
Choose jeans with a shorter inseam. Jeans can also be hemmed. Avoid boot-cut jeans and cuffs, which will only shorten your legs.

Tummy. A boot-cut jean can balance a tummy, unless you have chunky thighs or short legs. Straight-leg jeans or straight-leg trouser jeans will also work. Look for a mid-rise that hits right at (not above or below) your “bulge.”

Hips. You need to find a pair of jeans that fit you at the widest part of your hips. Also, aim for a mid-rise and a straight leg. Avoid boot-cut.

Butt. Got a backside? You might be able to find jeans that have a lower rise in the front and a higher one in the back. Avoid embellished, embroidered, raised, or flap pockets in the back. However, if you’ve got a flat tush, these kinds of pockets can give you that lift you need.

Look for jeans in a dark wash (which are slimming, elongating, and more sophisticated) and that have a bit of stretch to them (for maximum comfort), no matter what your body shape.

Happy jean shopping!
