men fashionMost guys live with a “dress with least resistance” attitude when it comes to what they wear. A comfortable set of jeans and a t-shirt that doesn’t drive others from the room is enough to leave the house and engage in social activity.

However, there are times when you might need to dress up. It could be a job interview, meeting with a client or even a special date. Here are a few things you should pay attention to when determining what you wear and why.

  • Tags were made for reading. You might have clothes that need to be washed at a special temperature setting or they might need dry cleaning. You can’t toss them all in the same load and expect perfect results. Clothing must also be washed on a regular basis. Manufacturers put labels on their clothing for a reason.
  • Color coordination is important. In dress clothing it is important to match basic colors. For instance black slacks require black shoes – brown slacks need brown shoes. Don’t mix them. Gray and khaki don’t mix, neither does black and navy.
  • Allow your tailor to be right. You may want to believe you are the same size you were in high school. You will not only be uncomfortable if you try to fit into clothing that is too small, but you will waste money and be the object of ridicule from those who can tell the difference between reality and ‘glory days’. A new fitting may be needed and perhaps an apology to your tailor.
  • Details are important. Ties should touch your belt, socks should be lighter in color than your shoes, but they should also match your pants, shoes and belt should match in color, do not wear a tie with a short sleeve shirt, wear either a belt or suspenders, but never both, and do not mix non-uniform stripes.
  • Your dress clothes should allow supreme comfort. If you are not comfortable in your clothes you may need to ask a tailor to help you discover what part of your wardrobe is not sized correctly. This could be a shirt that is too tight around the neck, a jacket that is not fit to your shoulders or a pair of pants that are too long, short or tight.
  • Styles Change. Take the time to evaluate whether certain items in your wardrobe are still fashionable. Certain clothing designs wear well initially, but may fall from fashionable grace along the way. If comfortable, ask someone you trust for his or her opinion.
What you wear can say a lot about you. The question is, “What is it saying?”

In some environments you may be able to blend unorthodox fashion designs and be viewed as trend setting, but this only happens when people have already been allowed to see you demonstrate long-standing fashion sensibility. There may be room for nonconformity in what you wear, but if your job demands that you dress up the above list may help you come to terms with the right way to present yourself to others.
