What you wear and how you wear it can do a lot, both positive and negative, for your overall appearance. Clothes can, for example, make you look pounds heavier than you really are. However, fortunately they can also do the opposite!
So while you’re waiting for that new diet and exercise program to kick in, or if you feel like you can’t be bothered with trying to lose that extra bit of weight, or if you just want to look better in your clothes, here’s what you can do, now, to dress to look 10 pounds slimmer:
It’s what underneath that counts
Let your underwear serve as the foundation for your appearance. Invest in a new bra that lifts and supports your chest; buy tummy-, waist-, and/or hip-control panties (depending on your particular trouble spots); and try control-top pantyhose with skirts and dresses.
Your body will look less bumpy and lumpy and more smooth and sleek.
Accessorize
Accessories, such as jewelry (earrings, necklaces), scarves, handbags, belts, and shoes, can draw attention away from any of your body “imperfections” and toward your face and the accessories themselves.
Tips: don’t go overboard with accessories; choose a few that complement your outfit and play up your best features and also make sure they are proportionate to your size (a tall, full-figured woman, for example, can look even bigger while carrying a teeny-tiny purse; on the other hand, a petite, small-framed lady will be dwarfed by a large handbag). For shoes, remember that heels lengthen the leg line, which makes you look slimmer.
Check fit and size
Clothes that are too small and/or cling too tightly will only accentuate features you may wish to disguise. However, don’t think that hiding in oversized, baggy, tent-like monstrosities will do you any favors, either. Instead, look for fitted (not tight) clothes that skim over the body; further, structured clothes (a fitted, structured jacket, for example) can give you a smooth, proportioned look.
Check color and print
Don’t overwhelm your body in too many bold, bright colors and crazy prints. Make sure to pair dark neutrals (black, navy, brown, charcoal gray) with some color, texture, and/or print. And, just like with accessories, the size of any print you choose must be proportionate to the size of the woman.
Dress for your shape
It’s all about shape and proportion, not size. Learn what shape you are (rectangle, triangle, inverted triangle, or hourglass, for example) and what types of clothes flatter those shapes, and then dress accordingly.
The basic rule of thumb here is to emphasize your most flattering features, downplay your less-than-flattering assets, and create balance and an overall proportionate shape.

If you follow these simple tips, you’ll be on your way to looking slimmer and shapelier; in fact, you may be so pleased with your appearance that you’ll no longer the feel the need (if you even did in the first place) to lose those last 10 pounds!
