It is a sad truth when a man can not tie his necktie properly. The truth be told, it’s simply tragic. And in enters the bowtie, and the admirably sickening clip-on tie that always looks so darn cheesy its worse than a pile of cheddar.
And still, many men will haplessly admit that they suck at tying their tie. But there are some easy tricks to tying that tie properly that will make you neck worthy of even the strictest office.
If you are still suffering from I-can-not-tie-my-necktie-properly phobia, rest assured, I have noosed my own squeaker on many occasions, although I prefer not to have to—and one thing remains true: practice makes perfect.
So without any more trumpets blaring, the fanfare aside, learn how to tie your damn necktie already guys, these simple steps are sure to show you how to wrap that classic Windsor knot around the base of your noggin.
Step One: Place the tie around your neck with your collar up. You want the wider side to the right and the skimpy side to the left. Pull the tie around your collar and assure that you have about six inches of slack on the skinny side and the majority of slack on the wider side – the skimpy side needs to be shorter so the wider side can hang properly – a good rule of thumb is to pull on the wider side until it sits about four inches above your belly button.
Step Two: Cross the wider side of the tie over the skinny side, making a ‘V’ shape so the skinny side is underneath the wider side. Then after you wrap the wider side around in the shape of the ‘V’ tuck it underneath and pull it over the top of the ‘V’ – that is the first part of the Windsor knot.
Step Three: As you pull the wider side through make sure that it is right side up and the warp it to the left so that it folds over and pass the wider side underneath the knot straight left. Pull it around the front again, slowly to create to the other side of the Windsor, and the tuck it back underneath the ‘V’ shape. This will create a little loop on the top of the ‘V’, the Windsor trick.
Final Step: Pass the wider side back underneath and through the ‘V’ hole and in through the loop that was created with the last few steps. Pull it down through the loop taut, and then pull on the skinny side underneath to adjust the tie comfortably around your throat.
