rental trucksThere was a time when it was fairly common for certain types of employees to be offered moving expenses when they accepted a new job. Movers would come into a home and pack and haul all the belongings in your home and physically transport the contents to your new location and place those items in your new home. This was a relatively painless way to move. For many employees (and their employers) the times have changed. If moving expenses are offered it is typically in the form of a rented truck that you personally fill and drive to your new residence.

Other types of services are available including one that allows you to fill a truck with your home furnishings, but a professional driver will transport it for you. The reason this may be a popular option has to do with the fact that many homeowners are not especially comfortable driving large moving vehicles. However, if you are on a budget and want to get the most for your moving money we’d like to look at some of the least expensive options available to you today (in no particular order).

Penske Truck Rentals

With over 1,500 locations across the U.S. this company provides customers with unlimited miles and claims no hidden fees. This firm also offers a 10% discount when truck rental is booked online.

Budget Truck Rental

The firm offers a 15% discount when you charge the rental on your American Express Card. Other offers include a 20% discount for AARP members and a $50 American Express gift card for a one-way move. Not all offers can be applied to the same move.

Ryder

Offering a savings of up to 25% this company offers a variety of moving vehicles from vans to much larger over the road vehicles.

U-Haul

This company is well known for their low deck allowing easier loading and unloading of your material possessions. They also boast of 15,000 locations, which may make them the better-known truck rental company. While their website did not indicate a discount they did indicate the consumer savings in unleaded fuel over diesel may be substantial.

Which is better?

The answer to this question may depend on the day and the distance of your move. Be sure to get competing quotes and don’t be afraid to pass along a lower quote you may have received. Many of these companies may compete for your business. Some companies may even be willing to combine coupons and offers that may generally be unavailable. What you really need to do is simply ask for every possible discount and savings. Face it; the rental trucks on their lot are not making their owners any money if they don’t rent them. Competition may be strong in their field at this time in American history.

Additional Motivation

These companies are also competing with a new and growing market for businesses that provide drivers (as mentioned above – second paragraph). Truck rental companies may be able to provide even greater savings if they know you are considering another service that includes a driver.

One More Tip

Many home improvement stores (Lowe’s included) will offer a discount on any moving supplies you may need. Check company websites for details or simply ask. Every little bit helps when you find you have a move in your plans.
