affordable rental apartmentsFinding a place to live can be a frustrating process. You’re looking for a rental but basically everything you seem to come across in your price range is in a bad area or isn’t big enough to accommodate your needs and lifestyle. You want to feel safe and if you have children you need to be in a neighborhood that is family oriented. So how can you find an affordable rental in a great community? Here are some tips.

Look for guest houses
Homes with guest houses for rent are typically in great neighborhoods. Look for these as they are affordably priced and often come with a lot of perks, like security systems, use of pools and outdoor facilities and possibly even a friendship if you get to know the homeowners.

Get on a waiting list
If there’s a popular apartment building or set of condos that are reasonable there is probably a waiting list or an interest list. Get your name on it and make sure you leave a phone number so you can be contacted the moment a place opens up. You never know how many people will leave or when it will happen so be prepared to move at any time.

Rent a fixer-upper
Find a place in a great community that just needs a little TLC. Since you’re just renting you might be able to talk to the owners about getting some repairs done or having a rent reduction for doing some of them yourselves. That way you have a place of your own and you get to live in a wonderful community.

Look for foreclosures
Sometimes when people reach the point of foreclosure they really don’t want to and you might be able to convince them to just let you rent out the house instead. That way they can keep their house and move into a smaller place to save some cash in order to pay back their debt and eventually reclaim their home. You might only be able to rent the home for six months or a year but it’s still worth it.

Consider splitting with a friend
If you don’t mind sharing a home with a friend or family member you can consider renting a larger place together. You’ll have to figure out how to split the utilities and other items but it can be a great option because you’ll get to spend more time together while having an amazing place to live in for less.
